Sunderland has announced that the 27-year-old midfielder has been suspended by the club pending the outcome of police investigation. A statement from the Premier League club said: "Sunderland AFC has confirmed that Adam Johnson has been suspended from the club, pending the outcome of a police investigation. No further comment will be made at the present time."
Police have confirmed that a man in custody is in connection with the alleged sexual activity with a minor, amid report that an England international footballer has been arrested on suspicion of having sex with a 15-year-old girl.
Reports emerged in British media on Monday of the arrest, with Durham Constabulary confirming in a statement that an individual is being held.
"A 27-year-old man was arrested earlier today on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16,"read the statement.
"He remains in police custody and is helping officers with their enquires."
