Roma hit by Gervinho hamstring blow

Gervinho faces a three-week spell on the sidelines after the Roma forward injured his hamstring during Sunday's 1-1 draw between the Ivory Coast and Equatorial Guinea.

The Ivorian was withdrawn 39 minutes into the stalemate in Abidjan with what transpired to be a hamstring strain.

It means Gervinho will miss around three weeks of Roma's Serie A run-in, including Saturday's clash with fellow high-flyers Napoli.

Trailing leaders Juventus by 14 points, Roma are in danger of surrendering second place to rivals Lazio after posting just one win in their last six league outings.

Gervinho, who is also set to be absent for the league clashes with Torino and Atalanta, will begin a recovery programme on Wednesday.

Southampton announce £33.4m profit

Southampton have announced a post-tax profit of £33.4million for the year ending June 30, 2014.

it is the first time the club, who finished eighth in the premier league last season, have posted such profit since entering administration in 2009, when they were relegated to league one.

The club's total revenue increased to £106m (from £71.8m the previous year), with the rise accounted for by the lucrative television rights deal.

The St Mary's Stadium outfit expanded the wage bill from £41.4m to £55.2m and showed debts of approximately £50m.

Chief executive officer Gareth Rogers told the club's official website: "There are lots of positives to take from these financial results. Recording the first profit and positive net asset position for the first time since administration in 2009 is very pleasing.

"It shows the health of the club and the group is strong and the foundations are there to be built on.

"The opening of the Staplewood Campus training ground in November was an important step for the football club. A substantial investment was ploughed into the development and the state-of-the-art facilities will further enhance the staff's ability to maximise the potential of our first team and academy players.

"Our focus remains on developing significant commercial growth which will support our vision to create a sustainable business model.

"We have a strong business plan in place and we're already seeing the green shoots of that plan. We believe it is possible to be a well-managed, well-structured football club that is successful both on and off the pitch."

I will accept Real Madrid Job if offered - Zidane

Zinedine Zidane has revealed he would accept the Real Madrid coach's job if the offer came along but has reiterated his support for under-pressure Carlo Ancelotti.

The Frenchman, who won La Liga and the UEFA Champions League in a five-year spell at Real from 2001 to 2006, is coach of the club's reserve Castilla outfit.

Zidane has taken measures to boost his coaching knowledge, observing training at Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich last week.

Speculation over the future of Ancelotti has only intensified following Real's 2-1 Clasico defeat to Barcelona last weekend, with Zidane one of the men mooted to be in contention to replace the Italian should he leave his post.

And Zidane told Canal Plus: "If the role of coach at Real Madrid was offered to me I would certainly agree to it.

"However, there is a coach there right now who is doing a very good job. I am part of the club's structure and still learning.

"Am I ready for the job? You are never ready, but even if you're not you still have to say yes. When I was a player I didn't build my career over two years because things happen gradually. It's the same in coaching.

"I've learned a lot from Carlo Ancelotti and he knows how highly I regard him. He's the perfect coach for Real Madrid, despite what people are saying."

Meanwhile, France coach Didier Deschamps, who won the World Cup alongside Zidane, has talked him up as a potential national team boss in the future.

Deschamps said: "I do not know what he'll [Zidane] do next. But he has all the qualities to be [coach]."

Falcao equals Colombia´s all-time scoring record

Manchester United loanee Radamel Falcao may be struggling at club level but he is having no trouble on the international stage after matching Colombia's all-time scoring record in an international friendly against Kuwait.

Falcao converted a second-half penalty in Colombia's 3-1 victory over Kuwait to take his international tally to 24 goals in 56 appearances, the same amount as former striker Arnoldo Iguaran.

Monday's result in Abu Dhabi capped a successful international period for Falcao, who scored three goals in two matches, having only managed four in 22 appearances at Old Trafford this season.

"I am happy to have scored but the most important thing is the victory for the team," the 29-year-old said afterwards.

"Today, we played a good team in the shape of Kuwait who created several chances and that helps us prepare for similar situations in future matches.

"These wins will help to build confidence for the Copa America [hosted by Chile and gets underway on June 11 with Colombia drawn alongside Brazil - who edged them in the World Cup quarter-finals last year - Peru and Venezuela]."

Falcao - on loan from Monaco - returns to Manchester with fourth-placed United preparing to host lowly Aston Villa in Premier League action on Saturday

Spartak donate money to 102-year-old fan after robbery

A 102-year-old Spartak Moscow fan, who had money stolen from his home, has received a donation of more than €7,000 from the club.

Otto Fischer, who lives in Kopeisk - over 1,500 kilometres from the Russian capital - had more than €11,000 taken by an intruder.

Upon hearing the news, Spartak players donated money to help Fischer, while the club are set to give him a share of the ticket sales from Saturday's home game against Kuban Krasnodar.

"I am very glad to get this help," Fischer said, in quotes reported by Russia Today.

"I bow my head to everyone who helped me in this situation.

"If I get another opportunity to see another game, I certainly will with great pleasure.

"We have a saying: It is better to see something once than to hear about it one hundred times."

I have nothing to prove - Bale

Real Madrid star Gareth Bale insists he pays no attention to his critics and stated he has nothing to prove.

The forward has been the main focus of scorn from the Spanish media and Real supporters following the capital club's difficult start to 2015, with the former Tottenham man's car damaged after the 2-1 Clasico defeat against Barcelona.

However, Bale gave a timely reminder of the talent that saw Real shell out a club-record fee for his services in September 2013 with a starring role in Wales' 3-0 victory against Israel in Saturday's Euro 2016 qualifying contest.

The 25-year-old set up Aaron Ramsey for the first, before scoring twice in the second half in Haifa.

"I don't need to answer the critics," Bale said.

"I know, and everyone around me knows, what I can do.

"There are ups and downs in football. You have to take it with a pinch of salt and all you can do is respond with your performances on the pitch, like that.

"I don't feel I need to prove anyone wrong or right, I just need to play my football."

Suarez: It was great to be back at Anfield

Luis Suarez admitted he had missed playing in front of the Anfield crowd after making a return to his former home for the All-Star charity game on Sunday afternoon. Liverpoolfc.com reports

The Uruguayan, who left Liverpool in July last year after netting 82 goals in 133 games for the club, took to the field as a half-time substitute in the special showpiece match.

Accompanied by Fernando Torres, the forward led the line for Steven Gerrard's side as they battled to draw level with Jamie Carragher's team in front of the Kop.

Mario Balotelli and Didier Drogba both hit the back of the net in the first half, before Gerrard pulled one back prior to the interval - and, with the help of Suarez, the skipper was able to fire an equaliser in the game.

Asked if he had missed the Anfield atmosphere, Suarez told Liverpoolfc.com: "Yes, of course, because it's unbelievable, it's amazing for me.

"Everyone who's played for Liverpool knows how important the supporters are. Now they know they are in my heart.

"It's always nice, not just to come back to Anfield, but to come for a great game, for all the players, for the supporters, for the foundation and for Stevie - it was a special game."

Suarez and Torres linked throughout the second half as the Kop sung their names one after the other - and Suarez admitted afterwards it was special for him to play alongside the Spaniard.

"It was great for me," said the 28-year-old. "Four years ago when I arrived here for Liverpool, I crossed my fingers to play with Fernando and he left three days after I signed.

"Today was a great day for all the players, but for me and Fernando it was a great chance to play together."

Suarez was brought down inside the penalty area in front of the Kop in the 68th minute of the game after Carragher felled the tricky striker - and Gerrard scooped the ball before offering it to his former teammate.

"Steven asked me [about taking the penalty] because he's a great person," said Suarez. "He knows it's important when a player comes back after a few months to score a goal, but for me it is not important because the day is for him."

By way of final reflection on an emotional afternoon for the forward, there was just time for a last poser for the Uruguayan, who was asked if he would ever contemplate a return to Anfield.

"You never know [what will happen] in football, but if in the future I play in England again, I play with the Liverpool shirt on and not another shirt," was his response.

Suarez goalless on Anfield return, but Balotelli nets stunner

Luis Suarez was unable to get among the goals as he returned to Liverpool in a charity match pitting a Steven Gerrard XI against a side led by Jamie Carragher.

Mario Balotelli crashed a 25-yard stunner home before Didier Drogba rounded Brad Jones to put Carragher's side 2-0 up.

However, Gerrard netted from the spot in either half to secure a 2-2 draw.

Suarez was not the only former Anfield favourite to return, with Fernando Torres, Pepe Reina and Xabi Alonso all turning out.

Liverpool fans among the sell-out Anfield crowd will have been pleased to see Jon Flanagan and Lucas Leiva get run-outs as they return to fitness.

Gerrard's XI : Brad Jones, Anthony Gerrard, Glen Johnson, John Terry, John Arne Riise, Kevin Nolan, Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Ryan Babel, Thierry Henry, Jerome Sinclair. Substitutes: Scott Dann, Ashley Williams, Luis Suarez, Fernando Torres, Charlie Adam, Jay Spearing, Stephen Warnock, Joao Carlos Teixeira.
Carragher's XI : Pepe Reina, Jon Flanagan, Jamie Carragher, Alvaro Arbeloa, Martin Kelly, Harry Kewell, Stewart Downing, Lucas, Jonjo Shelvey, Didier Drogba, Mario Balotelli. Substitutes: Peter Gulacsi, Luis Garcia, Craig Noone, Alberto Moreno, Gael Clichy, Fabio Borini, Craig Bellamy.

South Africa 1 Nigeria 1: Zungu strikes late to earn draw

Drama ensued at the Mbombela Stadium as Bongani Zungu's injury-time strike rescued a 1-1 draw for South Africa in Sunday's friendly against Nigeria.

It appeared as though South Africa would rue Andile Jali's missed penalty when Ahmed Musa's excellent strike put Nigeria into a 1-0 lead with five minutes left on the clock.

But Zungu pounced to earn a share of the spoils in the fourth minute of additional time in Nelspruit.

A draw was the least South Africa deserved, but their hoodoo against Nigeria continued with their last victory against the Super Eagles coming in 2004.

Shakes Mashaba's side started brighter and Zungu forced Daniel Akpeyi into a fine fingertip save with an accurate drive from the edge of the penalty area after good work by Thulani Hlatshwayo.

The hosts continued to probe and Tokelo Rantie's excellent work rate was causing problems for the Nigeria defence, the striker providing one particularly menacing cross that Sibusiso Vilakazi glanced wide of the left-hand post.

Matthews Manyisa was the next to try his luck for South Africa with a free-kick that narrowly cleared the crossbar.

Nigeria's attacks had largely been repelled by the home team, although Aaron Samuel's left-footed bending effort beat Itumeleng Khune in the South Africa goal but went narrowly wide.

The visitors were dangerous on the counter-attack after the break, but it was South Africa who fluffed their lines with the game's best chance in the 61st minute.

Thulani Serero was chopped down in the penalty area by Godfrey Oboabona and from the resulting spot-kick Jali saw his effort saved by Akpeyi.

It appeared as though that would be a costly miss in the 85th minute when Musa cut in from the left-hand side before bending his strike into the far top corner.

Nigeria were unable to see out the win, though, as Zungu capitalised on uncertainty in the Nigeria area to hook home with his left foot on the rebound.

Bring on Nigeria - Hlatshwayo

Bafana Bafana defender Thulani Hlatshwayo says he can’t wait for the mouthwatering clash between South Africa and Nigeria.

The two nations meet in an international friendly match on Sunday, 29 March 2015 at the Mbombela Stadium.

The BidVest Wits strongman was absent when Bafana Bafana travelled to Uyo Akwa Ibom Stadium in Nigeria for the second leg of the 2015 Orange CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifier where it ended in a 2-2 stalemate.

“First of all I am very happy that I have been given a chance again to represent my country, it’s always an honour. The Nigeria clash is going to be very interesting. You must remember we were the ones who denied them a chance to defend their AFCON title so they will be coming here with guns blazing and wanting to prove a point. But the good thing is that lately we enjoy playing against them, they are very arrogant and that is only because they are confident,” said Hlatshwayo, played in the first leg with ended 0-0 in Cape Town.

The BidVest Wits captain says he was saddened by missing the trip to Nigeria.

“As a footballer, you want to play every game of the national team, as long as you get a call-up. So having to miss the match in Uyo due to suspension was not a lovely thing, especially considering the fact that in the first leg I believe I played very well and denied a chance to score. But it is going to be a very difficult match. It would be great to win, and not just win but also dominate them. This is a new era and we want to also make our mark.”
