Real Madrid have confirmed that Luka Modric has strained ligaments in his right knee and must now wait to see when the influential midfielder will be available again.
Modric, who only came back from a four-month injury lay-off in March, was substituted in the second half of Real's 3-1 home win over Malaga on Saturday after damaging his knee in a challenge with visiting midfielder Recio.
The Croatia international underwent tests on Sunday morning and, while Madrid have not given any estimate on how long Modric might be out for, reports in Spain suggest he could be sidelined for up to six weeks.
A club statement read:
"Following tests carried out on Luka Modric at the La Moraleja Sanitas Hospital by Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been found to have a strain to the medial collateral ligament of his right knee. His situation will be monitored".
